K-State Canvas manual course and student options

Creating manual K-State Canvas courses and manually managing students

  • K-State restricts the ability for individuals to create courses themselves via the Create New Course button.
    • K-State Canvas is for credit courses and student enrollments are driven by KSIS.
  • Manually adding students to KSIS credit courses or sections is not allowed.
    • They should be added via KSIS, including instructor assignment changes and they will be added via KSIS>Canvas integration to the course within minutes.
  • Manually created courses for the purpose of splitting a credit course into different groups or cohorts is no longer allowed.
    • Sections within the credit courses is recommended.
  • Manually creating courses to deliver credit material or collect student academic work is not allowed. This work needs to happen in courses students are officially enrolled in.
    • Examples include grant or research efforts, study abroad planning spaces, accreditation or certification assessment, capstone or project work and collection.
  • Manually created Canvas courses are not approved for staff training or as method for communicating and sharing files with groups of staff or students. This should happen in Teams
    • Examples include promotion and tenure work, search committees, academic or administrative processes, staff resources or faculty or GTA training, and department or program resource sites.
    • Faculty and staff development trainings that provide HR or other professional development opportunities may be appropriate in K-State CanvasPro. Please reach out to Academic Affairs and Innovation staff to discuss this option.
  • Manually created course shells for development and reuse of course material with a shared teaching effort are allowed and can be requested, see below.

For department or staff needs, communication or info sharing with a group of students, faculty or staff, and other examples as listed above, Microsoft Teams (and Sharepoint for a more robust experience) are the recommended options. With chat, messaging, file sharing, etc. and desktop and mobile options, it provides a robust platform for things such as staff training, group communication, etc.  Current students, faculty, and staff can be invited and managed easily. OrgCentral should be used for student clubs or other student run organizations.
