Overview
When searching for classes in KSIS, most courses follow the standard 16-week (fall/spring) semester structure. However, some courses are offered in a part-of-term/shorter sessions (for example: 8-week, 5-week, intersession, or summer sessions).
To help locate these courses, the Session field in Class Search allows you to filter results by the specific academic session in which the class is offered.
Understanding how sessions are used can help you perform more effective searches.

Tips for Effective Class Searches
-
Use the Session filter when looking for short-term or intersession courses.
-
If a course does not appear in the expected session, check the NonStandard session results.
-
Combine the Session filter with Subject or Course Number to narrow results.
Recommended Search Approach

Step 1: Search by the Specific Session
-
Open Class Search in KSIS.
-
Locate the Session field.
-
Select the session that matches the time frame you want (for example, Eight Week – Second).
-
Click Search.
This will return courses specifically scheduled in that session.
Step 2: Check NonStandard Courses
If you do not see the course you expected:
-
Return to Class Search.
-
Change the Session field to NonStandard.
-
Run the search again.
-
Review the results for courses that may have irregular start/end dates.
Why You May Need to Search Multiple Sessions
When classes are entered into KSIS, staff select the session that best matches the course schedule. However, because many different session options exist, occasionally a class may be assigned to an unexpected session category.
For example:
For this reason, advisors and students sometimes perform a secondary search to ensure all relevant classes appear.
Notes
Session Options Explained
When a class is created in KSIS, the academic department assigns it to a specific session that matches the course schedule structure. Examples include:
-
August Intersession
-
Eight Week – First
-
Eight Week – Second
-
Five Weeks – First / Second / Third
-
Four-week Summer sessions
-
January or May Intersession
-
Six-week – Summer sessions
Selecting one of these options in the Session field allows you to search specifically for courses offered during that timeframe.
What “NonStandard” Means
The NonStandard session option is used for courses that do not match any of the predefined short-term session structures.
Examples might include:
-
Courses with unique start and end dates
-
Courses with irregular meeting patterns
-
Special program offerings that fall outside typical session lengths
Because these courses do not align with the standard session definitions, they are categorized as NonStandard.
