This article is intended for faculty, instructors, instructional designers, and academic support staff at the university who are developing or maintaining courses in the Canvas learning management system. It provides a comprehensive list of third-party Learning Tool Interoperability (LTI) options that have been vetted for use within Canvas. Learning Tools Interoperability is an education technology specification developed by the 1EdTech Consortium (formerly known as IMS Global). It specifies a method for learning management systems to communicate with external systems. These tools are essentially “plugins” that provide extended functionality within Canvas.
Users can:
- Make informed decisions when selecting tools for content development, discussions, assessments, multimedia, or other instructional activities
- Identify which tools are already reviewed for security, accessibility, and compatibility
- Understand what integrations are available for immediate installation or request
Approval process
All Canvas integrations must go through the K-State Purchasing Process, even if they are free/no cost, to ensure they receive the proper approval, data stewardship, and security reviews before implementation as student data may be sent and received through the LTI. The approval process for each tool will include reviews for accessibility, security, data stewardship, cost, and legal, as well as other factors.
- LTIs and publisher content tools cannot be added to Canvas until after the review is complete and approved.
- On average, a review will take 1 to 2 months, however, there is no guarantee an LTI will be available for a specific term.
- Once a tool is approved, the requester will be notified. If a tool is not approved, the requester will be notified of the reasons, and alternate options will be suggested (if applicable).
- Canvas LTIs will be configured at the course, academic department or college, or University level as appropriate.
- Once approved, future requests to have the LTI enabled at the course or other level can be made via the via the Learning Management and Lecture Capture service request form.
- You should not write in the use of any proposed LTIs into grants, until the review process is complete, and the tool has been approved for integration.
- LTIs that duplicate current services may not be approved. See list above for the services presently available.
- For adopting an LTI or tool with student-paid subscriptions for fees requires a different process. Please contact the Office of Academic Affairs and Innovation.
To request a Canvas app, LTI, or external tool integration:
-
Download and complete the IT Request Form: Software, Hardware, or Installation / Relocation / Changes. This form is currently a fill-able PDF. You will need to attach it in step 2 in K-State's Purchasing Request portal.
-
Complete a K-State Purchasing Request and attach the completed PDF of the IT Request form. This initiates the proper Purchasing, Data stewardship, and IT Security reviews and ensures K-State has the proper signed agreements in place required by the state and KBOR.
-
Once this is completed, you can make a request to add the tool to your Canvas course by completing a Learning Management and Lecture Capture service request.
-
You will include your K-State Purchasing contract number or link in the request and that will serve as the approval to add the tool to Canvas.
-
Please attach the completed IT Request Form: Software, Hardware, or Installation / Relocation / Changes PDF form to this TDX request as well.
If you have questions about this process or need assistance, please request a meeting to discuss via the Learning Management and Lecture Capture service request form.
