 Details

K-State licenses Respondus Lockdown Browser and Respondus Monitor for the full university and it is available to all courses in Canvas.

  • You can begin using it by going to a Canvas course and choosing Settings. Go to the Navigation tab, find Lockdown Browser and enable it. Then scroll to the bottom to save the change.
  • It will add Lockdown Browser to the course navigation on the left that students do not see.
  • Once added any Canvas Quizzes you create will be available there for you to configure for security, integrity and remote proctoring with Monitor.

Respondus LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within Canvas. When students use LockDown Browser they are unable to print, copy, go to another URL, tab or browser, or access other applications. Specific applications such as a calculator or URLs such a an online resource can be allowed.
When an assessment is started, students are locked into it until they submit it for grading.

Respondus Monitor is an automated proctoring system. It requires the use of Lockdown Browser and when the Monitor option is enabled, it uses a student’s webcam and video analytics to help deter academic dishonesty during non-proctored exams. Students use webcam to record themselves during an online exam. Afterward, flagged events and proctoring results are available to the instructor for further review.

When enabled for a Canvas quiz, the student receives a prompt to download the Respondus LockDown Browser (and Respondus Monitor) application and install it on their device before they can access the quiz. This link is set up specifically for K-State, students should not download and install other LockDown Browser for quiz taking at K-State.
