Enabling the Focused Inbox (Clutter) feature in Outlook on the web

Summary

How to enable the Focused mailbox.

Body

 Objective

Focused Inbox (formerly known as "Clutter"), is an email filtering option available to Microsoft 365 users.  It is similar to an anti-spam filter as it moves less important emails (based on your reading habits) into an 'Other' folder where they can be ignored or reviewed later.  Most of the mail going into the folder should be bulk mail (advertisements) and messages from mailing lists.  However, you will want to periodically check the 'Other' folder as it may move legitimate emails into this folder.

 Procedure

  1. Sign into webmail.
  2. Click on the Gear icon located at the top right of your screen.

  3. Click View all outlook settings

  4. Click Mail and ensure Layout is also selected.

  5. To the right of Layout, you should see Focused Inbox
  6. Underneath Focused Inbox, select the desired option between "Sort messages into Focused and other" and "Don't sort my messages".

  7. Finally, click Save.

Note: When it is first enabled, it will split your inbox into Focused and Other.

Once Focused Inbox(Clutter) is enabled in Webmail, it appears in other clients linked to your Office365 account, including Outlook on both Windows and OS X desktops and notebooks, and the iPhone and Android OWA apps.

 Notes

  • If you have rules moving messages, Focused Inbox (Clutter) is applied after server-side rules are applied and items touched by rules won't be filtered by The Focused Inbox (Clutter).
