Muting an assignment in the New Gradebook
With the switch to New Gradebook, the mechanism for hiding/posting grades to students (known as Muting) has changed to provide more flexibility for instructors.
Muting with the Old Gradebook
When an assignment is Muted, students cannot view their:
- Grade for the assignment
- Submission comments
- Quiz submission
- Grade change notification
- Score curving notification
When an assignment is Unmuted, students can view their:

- Score curving notification
Grade Posting Policy and Post/Hide Grades
In the New Gradebook, the Muting function is now handled with Grade Posting Policy and Post/Hide Grades. The new features allow instructors to:
- Provide more granular control over the posting of grades
- Default to Automatically Post Grade for the whole course
- Can be changed for the whole course or a single assignment
- Automatically Post Grades - Grades will be visible to students as soon as they are entered. Grades that have already been hidden will remain hidden.
- Manually Post Grades - Grades will be hidden by default. Any Grades that have already been posted will remain visible. Choose when to post grades for each assignment individually.
While grades are hidden, students will be unable to view their:
- Grade for the assignment
- Submission comments
- Quiz submission
- Grade change notification
- Score curving notification
