Relationships (a.k.a. combined section) are illustrated in KSIS and Coursedog, but maintained in KSIS. Review the definitions below, and click on the type to jump to the procedure.
Relationships are defined as;
Cross-Listed: Cross-listing is an administrative way for two or more academic units to share responsibility for a single course. The same course is offered collaboratively by two or more academic units and identified by the same course hundred level (i.e. both 2xx, 3xx, etc.), course name, course description, K-State 8 tags, and learning objectives. Cross-listed courses are combined in the course catalog and when scheduled in KSIS and are subject to the retake policy as repeated courses.
Dual-Listed: The same course is offered by the same academic units and is identified typically by the same course name, but with different course prefixes, numbers, and levels. Each course should have clear learning outcomes that address the differences in the course level combinations, between an undergraduate/graduate course combination or master/doctoral course combination. These courses are typically for undergraduate/graduate combinations and do not typically deviate from more than one course (hundred) level as defined by KBOR (e.g., 500/600 or 600/700) or for master/doctoral combinations (e.g., 700/800 or 800/900). Justification must be provided for deviations of more than one-course description level.
Co-Convene: The temporary linking of one or more separate courses that are independent of each other but are combined into one class offering (same time/day and Facility ID) for administrative convenience. Co-Convened courses will have a similar course title and can be used for dual offerings of the same course (both undergraduate and graduate) or courses within different subject areas.
Equivalent: Courses offered by one or more academic units with different course numbers and course names may have a similar or different course prefix. Equivalent substitute courses are noted in the catalog that they cannot be taken for credit if credit has been received in specified equivalent course(s). Equivalent courses are subject to the retake policy as repeated courses.
Co-convening sections do not fit the standard combined section relationship concept. These types of combined sections are independent of one another, and because of that, they follow a different path to implement in Coursedog. A scheduler can freely manage these in Coursedog using the following steps.
- In Coursedog, navigate to the section dashboard or request page to open the section editor.
- Once the section editor is activated, scroll down to the General Information card.

- Click the drop down arrow and type in "CS -" to begin filtering results. Select CS - CO-CONVENE.

- Continue to make section edits and save or submit your changes when finished.
NOTE: This attribute specifically suppresses the "Double Book Room" and "Double Book Instructor" rules. Schedulers are responsible for ensuring total co-convening enrollment capacities do NOT exceed room capacity. This attribute does NOT create a functional relationship and instead provides a streamlined approach to effectively schedule multiple sections in a classroom on at the same time and same day.
Cross-listed, dual-listed, and equivalent courses are setup using what Coursedog calls "relationships". These are built and maintained directly in KSIS. Schedulers should work directly with the Office of the Registrar to create, maintain, and remove relationships. Schedulers are required to engage with the Registrar when maintaining meeting patterns and instructors. If a scheduler attempts these changes in Coursedog, they will see the rule "Same Time/Same Day/Same Room" appear and cannot save changes. Instead, users will submit a request outside of Coursedog.
- Navigate/bookmark the Registrar Forms page.
- Open Academic & Classroom Scheduling drop down.

- On card one, enter your contact information and details about the term and action for the relationships. Each request can identify up to five relationships for a single term and action. Click Next.

- Define the first relationship.
Class Section Information: List all classes that are to be combined in this request. Be sure to identify the subject area, catalog number, section, and section number.
Instructors to be listed: List the instructor information to be assigned to all class sections. Be sure to identify the first/last name (or ID #), role, print setting, and the level of grading access.

- Identify the relationship type and the meeting pattern.

- Lastly, add the start and end times of the group along with the desired Facility ID (or request we find a central space for you). At the very bottom of the form, is the ability to continue adding relationships to your request (you can request up to 5 in a single request). Selecting;
Yes - Allows you to enter another relationship
No - Takes you to the final commenting card.

- Finally, add any comments that are relevant to your request that is essential for the Registrar to be aware of. Click Submit when finished.
