Objective
This article provides step-by-step instructions for creating a Microsoft Teams team at K-State using either the desktop application or web browser. It explains how to select the appropriate team template, choose privacy settings, name the team, and complete the creation process, with guidance for both Teams grid and list views.

Create the team
Access Teams application by opening Microsoft Teams desktop application, or access it via a web browser at https://teams.ksu.edu If necessary, sign in using K-State’s SSO.
Depending on how your teams are displayed the following steps are slightly different. Please follow the appropriate instructions. Grid/Tile view is immediately below. List view is down further.

- On the left navigation rail, select Teams

Note: You may need to click Teams a second time to view all your teams’ tiles in a grid.
- In the upper right corner of the teams’ grid, select the Join or create team button, and select the Create team option.

- In the Create team page, choose the template for your team.
- Class – Teachers are owners of class teams and students participate as members. Each class team allows you to create assignments and quizzes, record student feedback, and give your students a private space for notes in Class Notebook. Is always Private.
- Professional Learning Community– Educators work together on shared goals or professional development. Each PLC team allows you to organize materials, collaborate, and access a OneNote notebook populated with templates for common PLC tasks. Can be either Public or Private.
- Staff – Staff leaders are owners of staff teams and add others as members. Each staff team allows you to communicate, share important documents, and set up a Staff Notebook to track common administrative goals. Can be Public or Private.
- Other – Basic, stripped-down team. The minimum, but often the easiest. Can be Public or Private.
- Once you choose a team template, select the Use this template button.
- Select whether you want the team to be Public or Private.
- Public – anyone in our organization can join this team without permission. It is not public to the world, just public to K-State.
- Private – all members must be invited to the team.

- Enter a name for your team. Optionally, provide a description of the team.

- Finally, select the Create button.

Teams are displayed in List view.
- Scroll down to the bottom of your list of teams and channels, and select the link See all your teams.

Note: You may need to expand the Teams and channels section.
- In the upper right corner of the page, select the Create team button.

- In the Create team page, choose the template for your team.

Notes
- Freshly created teams can take up to 24 hours for all resources to be created and attached to the team, such as the OneNote notebook.
- Class teams are always private; owners are teachers; members are students.
- Public is not public to the world; it is available to everyone in our organization.
